The Unarchiver
About The Unarchiver
The Unarchiver is a free decompression utility for macOS, originally written by Dag Ågren in 2006 and now maintained by MacPaw. It supports far more formats than the built-in Archive Utility, and its developer states it is free and always will be, with no in-app purchases.
It fully extracts Zip, Zipx, RAR including encrypted and multi-volume archives, 7z, Tar, Gzip, Bzip2, XZ, CAB and MSI, joins .001-style split files and opens old formats such as StuffIt and DiskDoubler. It handles non-Latin filenames well. It does not create archives. It requires macOS 10.13 or later. Install it from the .dmg, choose the formats it should handle, and archives open with a double-click.
