v2.8.4·Media

About MPC-HC

MPC-HC (Media Player Classic - Home Cinema) is a long-standing open-source media player for Windows. It descends from Media Player Classic, which mimicked the simple look of Windows Media Player 6.4, and is now maintained by the developer clsid2 on GitHub after the original project ended.

As a DirectShow player it uses the actively maintained LAV Filters for decoding, handling formats such as HEVC, VVC and AV1, and it can be extended with third-party filters. Recent builds add a dark or light modern theme, seek-bar previews, online subtitle search, resume playback, A-B repeat and speed control, plus HDR playback through MPC Video Renderer or madVR. It is licensed under GPL v3 and supports Windows 7 through 11.

Key features

  • LAV Filters decoding for HEVC, VVC, AV1 and more
  • Modern dark/light theme with seek-bar preview
  • HDR playback with MPC Video Renderer or madVR
  • libass and WebVTT subtitles with online search
  • Playback speed, A-B repeat and resume position
  • Open website URLs with yt-dlp
  • Fully customizable hotkeys

Antivirus blocks it

Open-source apps are often flagged because they aren’t commercially signed. Check the SHA256 first, then allow it in your antivirus.

Won’t start, or a DLL is missing

Usually a missing runtime. Install Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable (x64) and the .NET Desktop Runtime, then try again.

Check the file

Run this in Command Prompt and compare the result with the SHA256 listed for the cloud file:

certutil -hashfile "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\file-name" SHA256
