About Rufus

Rufus, the Reliable USB Formatting Utility, is a free and open-source portable application for Windows released under GPL-3.0. It needs no installation and creates bootable USB drives from Windows, Linux and other ISO images for BIOS or UEFI systems, including UEFI-bootable NTFS.

It can build Windows 11 installers for PCs without TPM or Secure Boot, preset first-run options such as a local account, and download official Windows 8, 10 and 11 retail ISOs. Rufus also formats drives to FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, UDF, ReFS and ext2/3, creates Windows To Go and persistent Linux drives, images disks to VHD, VHDX or FFU, computes checksums and checks for bad blocks and fake flash drives. It runs on Windows 8 or later.

How to install

“Windows protected your PC”

SmartScreen shows this for apps without a paid signature. Click “More info”, then “Run anyway”.

Antivirus blocks it

Open-source apps are often flagged because they aren’t commercially signed. Check the SHA256 first, then allow it in your antivirus.

Won’t start, or a DLL is missing

Usually a missing runtime. Install Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable (x64) and the .NET Desktop Runtime, then try again.

Check the file

Run this in Command Prompt and compare the result with the SHA256 listed for the cloud file:

certutil -hashfile "%USERPROFILE%\Downloads\file-name" SHA256
