draw.io Official Download
About draw.io
draw.io is a long-established diagramming tool that was also known for a time as diagrams.net. It can be used to draw flowcharts, UML diagrams, mind maps, floor plans, circuit diagrams and infographics, and it is often regarded as a free alternative to Lucidchart and Microsoft Visio. It originally grew out of the JGraph project, and the company behind it is now called draw.io Ltd. draw.io Desktop is the official desktop version: it wraps the core editor in Electron, is open source under the GPL-3.0 license, and can be used for free without registering an account.
For Mac users, every official release includes three dmg installers, one for Apple silicon (arm64), one for Intel (x64) and a universal build, along with matching zip archives. You can pick the one that fits your machine or simply use the universal version. The macOS app downloads updates in the background and tells you in the editor when one is ready; clicking the prompt restarts the app to finish upgrading. If you prefer, automatic checks can be turned off under draw.io > Check for Updates Automatically. The app keeps its local storage in the ~/Library/Application Support/draw.io folder.
The desktop version is designed with security and isolation in mind. The developers state clearly that, apart from checking for updates once a day, the app does not connect to the internet. Diagram data is never sent out, and no usage statistics are collected. The web-based parts of the interface also use a content security policy that blocks remote scripts from being loaded.
Because no account is required, files are saved directly on your own computer. The interface is available in many languages, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, so it is easy to use for a wide range of people.
All of this makes draw.io Desktop a good fit for diagrams that involve internal information, such as system architecture, network topology and business processes. You get a capable, familiar diagram editor that works offline, while every file stays on your own Mac rather than in someone else's cloud.
