AltTab is an open-source window switcher for macOS. Its source code is published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license, and the project has been developed continuously since 2018. The built-in Command+Tab shortcut on macOS only switches between applications, so when one app has several windows open you need yet another shortcut to reach the right one. AltTab instead lists every window separately, each with a thumbnail preview, and works in a way that closely resembles Alt+Tab on Windows. That makes it particularly appealing to people who have moved from Windows to the Mac.

On the Mac, AltTab also includes minimized windows, hidden windows and windows sitting on other desktop Spaces in its switcher, using small badges to show where each one currently is. The window you highlight is temporarily shown at full size in front of everything else, so you can confirm it is the one you want before releasing the keys. From the switcher itself you can also close or minimize a window or put it into full screen.

The default shortcut is Option+Tab, which does not interfere with the system Command+Tab. If you prefer, you can assign Command+Tab to AltTab and replace the system switcher entirely. The app follows the system light and dark appearance, supports switching windows with a three-finger trackpad gesture, and works with accessibility features such as VoiceOver. You can exclude apps you do not want to appear in the list, such as virtual machines or remote desktop sessions, and a command-line interface lets you list and focus windows from the Terminal or from scripts.

The basic features of AltTab are completely free and will remain available, including per-window switching, previews and custom shortcuts. The developer also offers a paid AltTab Pro, which adds window search, more display styles, automatic resizing of previews and additional sets of shortcuts, and it can be tried for free first. The project stresses that the app does no telemetry or tracking and that data stays on your own machine.
