About VLC
VLC media player is a free, open-source, cross-platform player maintained by the non-profit VideoLAN. On the Mac it ships as a universal binary for Intel and Apple silicon, with separate builds for each chip as well.
Its strength is compatibility: MKV, MP4, AVI, FLAC, DVDs, audio CDs, VCDs and many streaming protocols play without extra codecs, which fills the gaps QuickTime leaves. VLC also switches audio and subtitle tracks, adjusts subtitle delay, takes snapshots, plays network streams and offers basic conversion and streaming output.
Key features
- Plays nearly every audio and video format
- DVD, audio CD and VCD playback
- Subtitle and audio track switching
- Network stream playback
- Built-in conversion and streaming output
- Universal binary for Apple silicon and Intel
